Weight-loss drug damages your nervous system

Mark Bear and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studied the effects of a chemical that suppresses appetite by blocking cannabinoid receptors in the brain, the same brain mechanisms that make people hungry when they smoke marijuana.

"I think that the cautionary note is that these mechanisms play an important role in ... brain development," said Bear, whose study appears in the journal Neuron.

Sanofi-Aventis' weight-loss pill rimonabant, also known as Zimulti and sold under the brand name Acomplia in Europe, is the first in this new class of drugs. A U.S. expert panel rejected it last June because of fears it might trigger suicidal thoughts.

Other drugmakers, including Merck & Co Inc, are working on similar drugs.

Bear's team at MIT was hoping to gain insight into how the brain adapts and rewires itself through learned experiences. This so-called plasticity is central to the development of neurons in the brain of children and young animals.

Bear said these cannabinoid receptors are known to regulate signals between neurons, and his team wanted to see if they would have an effect on plasticity in these young mice.

They were specifically testing learning in the visual cortex of the mouse, a part of the brain that processes information gathered from what they see.

Fat cell remains active, even after complete weight loss

As per a new study show overweight contradictions have been raised after going through weight loss process.

Swedish researchers say, even after losing a significant amount of weight adults have about the same number of fat cells in their body constantly. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, made their determination by studying fat samples from liposuction and abdominal reconstruction surgery in lean and obese volunteers, leading them to conclude that the number of fat cells is determined in childhood.

The researchers made their discovery by studying levels of radioactive materials locked inside of fat cells in people who had lived through the period of Cold War nuclear bomb testing from 1955 to 1963.

People whose fat cells developed before the onset of testing still had radioactive matter in the cells, showing that their fat cells were being replenished. The researchers were able to estimate that the body replaces cells at a rate of roughly 10 percent a year. The fact that fat cells are constantly dying and being replaced could potentially offer an opportunity to develop new anti-obesity therapies, the researchers wrote in their study, which was published Sunday in the journal Nature.

Lead study investigator Kirsty Spalding said that because the study highlights the fact that fat cell population in humans is dynamic -- as in, our fat cells are consistently dying and being replaced with new fat cells -- researchers should now focus on developing weight-loss drugs that modulate the number of fat cells so that there is more cell death than cell growth.

"Potential treatments could change the balance of the birth rate and death rate of fat cells, and could compensate loss by decreasing the overall number of fat cells to help keep this weight off," Spalding explained. "Or we could develop therapies to affect this balance in the opposite direction, like to aim therapies at increasing the number of fat cell growth in cancer patients."

All these comments are stated by highly qualified scientists who had continuously worked for come up with some great evidences.

Alison Braun, Second Biggest Loser, has great diet plans

Alison Braun, who stood second in ‘The Biggest Loser’, says I still wants to lose more weight and has huge plans for the future.

The 34-year-old aged-care worker said the growth in her mental strength over the last few months while competing in the weight-loss reality show had been as amazing as her physical transformation.

“The weight loss is fabulous, but the other bonus is that along the way I realised how disciplined, determined, focused and driven I could be.

“When I first started, I thought I’d only last a couple of weeks, because there were so many strong, young competitors in the house. I didn’t think I could do the challenges, but as I got through each one, I said ‘Wow, I can do it’.

“I learnt so much about myself. I can’t believe I did all that training – my mental strength amazed me. I never missed a day. I’d never pushed myself before, but in the house I pushed until I thought: ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t possibly do anymore’.

“I had really bad knees and at one point I had to tape them three times a day – I got blisters and the skin ripped off. And I ended up with tissue injuries after one of the challenges. So I had to work through a lot of pain.

Mrs Braun began the show at a weight of 121.7kg and lost 55.2kg over the last few months (a weight loss of 45.36 per cent) to reach 66.6kg and win the $25,000 prize money for second place, which she will spend on a family holiday.

“I want to finish the whole thing off a good note and I promised my family a holiday, so we’re off to Queensland to visit all the fun parks after I’m finished in Sydney,” she said.

A career change might be on the cards for the Therapy Co-ordinator, who said she loved her job but wanted to try something different such as motivational speaking.

“Doing the show was like an escape from reality for three months. Being away from your normal environment makes you re-evaluate things. I had such a positive experience, such an amazing time, I’d love to help other people, especially mums,” she said.

"My best advice to others who want to lose weight is to just make the decision to do it, and to realise you deserve to spend that time on yourself."

Mrs Braun said her fitness goal was to compete in triathlons because she enjoyed training so much and wanted to lose more weight to reach her goal of 60kg.

“Right now I’m focusing on maintaining everything I’ve lost. I can guarantee I’ll never go back to the weight I was. No item of food can taste as good as I feel now. It’s not that hard – watch what you put in your mouth and exercise.

“Before I lost the weight, I just existed. I hadn’t been living. There are all these things I want to do that I wouldn’t have tried before. When you're overweight, you're not living fully.
“I want to live. I want to be able to chuck a backpack on and head across Europe. I want to travel everywhere.

"Now I’m on top of the world. It’s been a completely life-changing, amazing journey.

"I've always had a positive personality, but I was always sitting on the sidelines. Now I feel as if I've been released from prison. I feel blessed.

US prisoner claims instant weight loss

An overweight prisoner in the United States is suing the authorities for not feeding him enough after he lost about seven stone (45kg) in jail. Broderick Lloyd Laswell, who is awaiting trial for murder, dropped to 22 stone (140kg) after eight months inside the Arkansas prison.

He claims his vision has gone blurry while trying to exercise. The prison says the meals average 3,000 calories a day - more than the US recommended daily intake for adults. Laswell has filed a federal law suit complaining Benton County jail does not provide inmates with enough food.

Hungry again

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 29 stone (187kg) when he was jailed in September. Police say he has been charged with fatally beating and stabbing a man, the Associated Press news agency reported.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," he wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again." He then goes on to complain about the lack of physical exercise, adding: "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."

The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals instead of cold food.

Heart attacks frequently occurs with excess fat

Heart attack is one of the major diseases which could result in instant death. Our scientists and doctors put their hard efforts to find the truth behind this dangerous attack. One day while reading newspaper I shocked for a moment when saw the major reason is excess amount of fat in your body. My grandfather was a health man but as age was increasing his body fat level hiked up, I know very well one day he told me he’s loosing his energy level due to overweight.

According to the American Heart Association, about 62 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease, which can include high blood pressure, coronary heart disease (heart attack and chest pain), stroke, birth defects of the heart and blood vessels, and congestive heart failure, and close to a million die from such conditions every year.

Research studies prove that diets high in fat and cholesterol cause blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure to go up, whereas low-fat, low-cholesterol diets cause blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure to go down.

"The problem is that people usually decide on alternative systems as a last resort," laments Imran Ali of the Integrated Medical Center (IMC), New Delhi. "A person suffers a heart attack and is rushed to a heart specialist. He is saved and then asked to control his weight, take a balanced diet and do regular exercises. That's when he comes to us! Why not earlier? Why do people have to undergo trauma and then learn? If they visit us early enough, the heart attack or stroke wouldn't occur in the first place," he says.

So, what are you waiting for rush up to your family doctor or physicians and take their advices on heart attacks. You may also contact me for any information about overweight and how to loose weight fast.
